Ceph is of course, an alien in human form, but to what extent Ceph is alien or human took a while to develop. Originally Ceph was designed as a human with an alien living symbiotically inside his body, and that alien gradually changed his body to make it more habitable. Later Ceph was conceived as an alien that was created in a human form, but still retains some of the design of the original symbiote. These drawings were done early in 2003 as part of a project for an anatomical drawing course. Below are described some of the basic features of Ceph's biology. 1-4. While in human form, Ceph's muscular and skeletal structure are quite similar to the human norm. Ceph is shown here in a more androgynous form because gender is something merely emulated by their race. Ceph's natural colouration is blue, but the skin cells contain chromatophors that can emulate human colouration. Though structurally similar, Ceph has a very different molecular composition, containing more metals and silicon than carbon. 5. The circulatory and lymphatic systems are similar to a humans', but the rest of the organs have been altered slightly to accommodate an alien metabolism. Ceph's blood is blue and would probably have a copper content rather than iron. It turns a dark blue when oxidized, but has a white glow when oxygenated. It is also slightly radioactive. The arterial system is shown in white and the venous system in blue. The lymphatic system is shown in orange to contrast it from the rest of the diagram, but would actually be transparent and colourless. 6. Ceph has a human brain and nervous system. The alien organs have appended themselves to it, having nodes bilaterally down the back and another alien brain at the base of the spine. The alien brain is probably one of their simplest models, acting mainly as a translation device and a telepathic communicator to their collective mind. The human brain has also been slightly modified to accommodate the alien metabolism. In some cases the alien brain may become more active and channel thoughts from their collective rather than to them. In this case roles are reversed--the human brain becomes dormant and merely acts as a translation device. The two brains cannot be fully active at the same time because the two kinds of consciousness are incompatible. 7. The digestive system has been almost completely removed and replaced by alien organs. The aliens seem to consider their own more efficient. The only recognizable organs here are the brain, lungs, stomach and what looks like a modified liver and kidneys. The rest of the organs are completely alien, so far in the series, no human scientist has been able to figure out exactly what they do. Many earlier Cephs suffered and had shorter life-spans because of imbalances in their alien/human biology. How the human and alien systems work together is not entirely clear, but this balance is something the aliens sought to perfect over many generations. |
